JACK JOHNSON, "Whale Sculpture" New Zealand MARCH 23rd 2008
above..Jack Johnson, holding his sculpture "MOTHER & CALF" Jack was immediately attached to the piece!
Music, Sculpture and our Environment are deep passions of mine here at Kauri Cliff Gallery. I needed to come up with a concept of fusing the three subjects together then developing that idea. I made the decision to donate one of the feature pieces in the gallery. And who better to donate this amazing piece to than the environmentally aware singer/musician Jack Johnson. The piece i chose was "MOTHER & HER CALF" (young whale following her mothers tail). This piece was carved out of Coromandel Kauri. The once large Kauri tree was felled by our early settlers back in the late 1800's, the trunk then taken away leaving this head of the Kauri to lay up in the native forest for years until the heavy rains washed this head wood out of the river then up on to a beach called Te Mata on the Thames coast. After finding this Kauri driftwood and climbing down the steep bank to get to this amazing piece, the decision was made to make one chainsaw cut down the middle. The cut was made so I could carry both pieces one at a time back up to my vehicle. As the two pieces fell apart from the chainsaw cut, low and behold there was "KOTUKU" the heron which won a 1st placing sculpture award and the other half was the whale sculpture "MOTHER & HER CALF".. Also, a piece to come off the same Kauri head was the "KAKA" Native NZ parrot (that features in the exhibitions section). ISN'T NATURE TRULY AMAZING!
